I’m of the opinion the job classification of Social Media Manager is well on the way to being main stream: I’ve heard “Director of Emerging Media” and similar phrasing.

15-20 years ago desktop computers “put secretaries out of work”, now they can’t get a job without MS works skills/ MS Excell skills/ Quickbooks skills/ and email skills

Pretty soon the receptionist job will be an executive position rather than one up from the mail room. Someone’s got to answer the twitter and the Facebook and that person has GOT TO BE ON THE BALL

10 yrs ago every company needed an IT department.. they just didn’t know it at the time, now no company can function without either an in house IT solution or contract out for IT support.

SEO and Social Media Marketing is right now where IT support once was.. every company needs this.. they just don’t know it yet

There are a high number of real estate agents is utilizing SEO and Social Media Marketing Skills due to the fact that real estate agents have “caught on”, come to the realization that SEO and Social Media Marketing is a full time profession… they will quickly die on the vine if they do not get a handle on this. Soon other genres will see the writing on the wall.

Below is an exchange between me and a Fan of my Frederick Web Promotions Facebook Page

Sean Mulgrew I wondered what those twitter lists were all about, so Google can see them? I’m beginning to realize half of the reason we bother with social stuff is so Google can see us

Frederick Web Promotions You got it… we’re leaving money on the table if we’re doing social media with social media only in mind: Kill 2 birds with one stone, Google can see most of these social signals, it’s half the reason for doing all this marketing, probably the bigger half

The how and why one company website ranks higher than another is complex, there isn’t “one thing” you can do “to” a website or “for a website” to get yours to perform better.

There are a number of factors in combination that need to work together, not only in combination with each other but the timing of execution also plays an important role in getting your company website to perform in a Google search result

Below is an infographic from one of the world’s top SEO gurus, Danny Sullivan

The chart below outlines how complex a total SEO campaign really is: it involves more than building backlinks, more than hiring a social media person to “improve your companies presence on social networks, it’s more then producing content (actually content has more to do with distribution among various marketing channels)

Below are just some of the factors in getting your website to perform. Remember ranking in Google isn’t everything, it is only the first step. Now you can begin to see why we charge $2400 a year to get your company to dominate one county, $500 a month to manage your total social media marketing ($6000 a year with a contra ct)

Interesting to note is that there are On Page things you can do to improve your sites ranking (this is what web designers think is important) and there are Off Page things to do (a web designer typically doesn’t want to talk about Off Page SEO or Link Building )… then there is content (the search engines can only spider text… the copywriting on your site determines if big G “trusts you” or not. One of the most important ranking factors is TrustRank, or does Google consider your site an authority on your topic or genre. Web designers I know refuse to want to get into the content creation business…

The Periodic Table Of SEO Ranking Factors, used with permission

The Periodic Table Of SEO Ranking Factors, used with permission http://searchengineland.com/seotable

Link building – What exactly does that mean?

The process of getting your companies website published on someone else’s website, creating what is known as a backlink (a link pointing back from them to you). At first you had to ask another webmaster (more like beg really) to add your link to their website.

Then it was discovered that if you listed your company website on dozens of what I call “yellowpages clone websites” or online directories, Google would value those as links pointing to your sites… Circa 2005, enter MySpace and social media profiles, it was found if you opened profiles on dozens if not hundreds of social networks AND added your website url, that counted as a back link as well.

I actually sent this to a new local Google advertising client of mine ( I subcontract to web designers) a moment ago and thought it prudent to repost here:

Here’s what needs to happen before we can start on your Local SEO:

We (the client and me/us) need to research what keyword phrase to target.

I can take suggestions from them (what do they *think* they want to rank for) THEN plug those into several keyword tools to garner our best guess (I know that’s not what you or the client wants to hear but big G does NOT reveal exact #’s on exact querys)

Then we pick from that research. I *could* just “Pick A Target” based on my experience

We need to make the client happy…

Here’s a potential problem: the client typically wants to rank for what THEY think people are searching for… often the client has no clue (not unlike a person who wants to sell their home but is asking for an unrealistic selling price)

OR… the client wants to rank for everything under the sun… not good

The way Google “passes out” Google trust is like this:

A) you gotta rank for SOMETHING before you can rank for anything
B) sell one thing… but sell it well
C) AFTER and only after you rank for the first “target” (which is what I call keywords, they’re targets to me), THEN we tackle what I call an “adjacent keyword phrase” and I’ll explain why:

It takes Googlebot roughly 6 weeks to index the entire planet/ every country, every language… that’s a baseline
It takes 6 MORE weeks to compare the baseline to the increase in inbound links/ social media mentions – likes- subscriptions – buzz created etc

This time frame is like a computer hard drive’s File Allocation Table: without a baseline to compare intervals from a starting point, there is no way to determine a position, If I handed you a map and said take 40 steps to your right… You’d have to first know where YOU are to figure out where 40 steps to your left is.

In plain English: one keyword phrase per 12 week cycle

perhaps not what the client wants to hear

… don’t shoot the messenger, it’s Google’s DoJo, I’m just telling you how the algorithm works.

Yes we are for hire and have a good, better, best plan for you to choose from

NOTE: we do not accept everybody that requests our services, the first hour is free to determine if we want to accept you and if we can do anything for you. We do not accept a client if we don’t think we can do something for you.

Getting Fans (or “likes” as Facebook now prefers to call it) is better than nothing but it’s NOT ENOUGH

Facebook Has A Spam Filter!

It’s good for you to “like” a Facebook business page but to really give that person’s FB business page a “boost” it’s better if you say something on that companies wall.

It does no one any good to have 1000 fans, if 990 of them never go back, don’t log in, and never said anything: What Facebook is looking for is participation.

The algorithm can not *read* what is being said, but it can measure activity: zero interest in a FB business page= Facebooks algorthim has no choice but to assume the page is relatively worthless, therefore that pages posts are deemed spam (none of that companies posts will be broadcast to the friends of friends News Feed)

All Outgoing (Broadcast) With ZERO Incoming (Receiving)= Facebook Considers Your Business Page to Be Spam

If no one is leaving a comment or asking a question the algorithm will NOT LET YOUR MESSAGES Go Out to your friends or fans News Feed!!!

So you have a company facebook page?

Great

I’m finding that if you don’t “bribe” people (offer value isn’t really bribing) they wont “say something” or interact… no interaction = your company facebook notes are NOT going out to the News Feed

Getting your posts to make it to the General Facebook News Feed is “friends of friends”… that’s a WHOLE LOTTA EyeBalls on your posts if you make it to the News Feed

A Company Facebook Page is only as good as it’s fan base interaction, it does no one any good to have a Facebook business page that is broadcasting (spamming) and not receiving (interaction), Facebook will block the outgoing messages of a FB page that is sending and not receiving.

Problem:

if you’re a newbie to Facebook Business Pages, the default view of your Company Facebook Page Wall does not always show you that a prospective customer just asked you a question:

What you have to do is to the link marked “Options” just below your wall, on the right side

Then click “Just Others”

What you want to see is Facebook Fan Interaction, the evidence of that interaction looks like this:

Social media consultants are popping up everywhere. Many social media types are claiming to also be SEO consultants.

Having your company “be” on social media is better than you not being there at all, but is your social media boosting your search engine rankings as well?

The most common social media mistake I see is not cross linking, if I see a “find us on Facebook” graphic but do have to hunt for a link to click on to become a companies fan (or “Like” some company on Facebook, becoming a fan is no longer the phrase FB uses) and there is no link…

You’re gonna make me hunt for your company on Facebook… well if you didn’t SEO your Facebook, I may or may not be able to find your company.

Twitter accounts with: no picture, no url, and a unoptimized description are not boosting the companies ranking.

SEO and SEM and SMO are different animals, much the same way advertising and marketing are different animals. The latter deserves it’s own post and I’m not going to address that in this post.

What is meant by Optimizing?

The term “SEO” means: search engine optimization

in a nut shell: early on, some marketers who were also webmasters (I fall into that category) discovered that if you changed/ edited/ altered an existing company website you could “get Google to like it more”

A website could be “optimized” to perform better in Google search results.

The name stuck, even though SEO now means much, much more than reworking a website to improve it’s ranking. Our results show us that most of what improves a website’s Google ranking has more to do with creating external websites to support a main website than fooling with the site structure on a given website.

I prefer the term SEM or Search Engine Marketing over SEO because just because a site ranks doesn’t mean that ranking is going to make the phone ring with rabid customers.

Local Google Advertising With Social Media

So how does one Optimize social media to improve local Google advertising?

Geo tagging

Many social media sites provide for you to specify, right down to the zip code or GPS coordinates where a picture was taken, or from what IP address a photo was uploaded.

Optimizing on site and in social media

Text (keyword density) how often you repeat the keywords you’re shooting for in X # of words

Blog Titles or sub headings: each blog post to a company blog needs to have the keywords you are shooting for in the title of the post. The title has a direct bearing on weather or not said post will show up in Google results where you’d like to see it show up

Uploading photos with Image 0459 rather than renaming the photo

If your social media consultant is not using these very basic SEO tactics… you need another social media person

Yes we are for hire!!

Fees For Search Engine Marketing and Social Media Optimization:

Social Media Optimization: 8 hours of one on one consultation, create social media profiles with SEO ranking specifically in mind. First Hour is exploratory, we may or may not choose to represent you, we will discover if we can realistically do something for your product or service in this first hour. Fee $100.00 per hour or $700 come into our shop at 1446 W Patrick St, Frederick Md or we can do remote log in where we can both move the mouse and I can answer questions over the phone live

Google Places or Google Local Business Listing ranking

Many small businesses come to us with excellent ranking in the organic listings (sometimes called the natural search results or the main body of search results) but they are NOT ranking in the 3 pack of Google Maps. Google Maps is often the ONLY search results displayed on a smart phone. Increasingly people will start using their smart phone instead of a laptop, you need your company to rank in the top 3 or you will be virtually invisible. Fee for top 3 ranking in Google Places and one listing in the top ten Google organic listings $2000 annually

Keyword selection: one on one consultation to select effective keywords $100.00 per hour Typically our clients have a long list of keywords they’d like to be found under, we counsel you should pick no more than 3 keyword phrases, sell one thing and sell it well. You only have X amount of Google authority available to you at one time, attempting to spread a finite quantity of Google Juice over many keywords is counter productive in our experience. Every 6 weeks add 3 more keyword phrases to target, do NOT attempt all of them at once.

Managed Company Facebook Pages

Ghost write content for the supporting blogs we create, get each of them to rank in Google and create content for your company Facebook page and get the company Facebook Page we create and manage for your company to rank in Google:

$1000 to $3000 upfront: between $500 month and $1000 month for retainer fee and content creation/management. Fee’s vary depending on the competitiveness of your target market. We can hit any target, some targets are harder to hit than others. Typical Fee is $15000 annually ideally for criminal lawyers, divorce attorneys that want to dominate the local search pages for the geographical area they practice law in.

National Rankings: fees vary depending on competitiveness of the selected keyword phrase. Fees range from $14,000 annually $2000 up front, $1000 month to as much as $25,000

Is Your Website Crafted To Please The Wrong Audience?

Do you do web design?”

The following reply is common for many SEO agencies:

“Not really, but I always seem to have to go behind you guys take the client out of the witness protection plan you all keep sending them to.”

Web Designers often think they’re supposed to be writing to please humans.

Many Web Designers are Totally Clueless…

If you don’t write to please GoogleBot FIRST

No one is ever going to see your Shakespearean prose of glitzy flash presentation.

Most web design or redesign projects are executed on specifications. In most cases, those specifications emphasize front end design and user experience elements as well as back end content management and administration features. What most web design specifications do not include is attention to how search engines will interact with the web site or how a re-design will impact current search engine visibility.

The result for a web site redesign or change in content management system that does not consider implications for search engines can be disastrous. When changes are made to a web site, it can affect overall content organization, navigation, past SEO efforts of content, syntax of file names and a host of other web page elements.

When search engines crawl web sites, they make copies of web pages and links. Changing web pages and links without redirecting in the right way can be confusing to search engines. The solution to this unintentional sabotage is to implement a SEO migration plan that will help mitigate any negative effects of a major site change. If a web site and the the links from other sites pointing to that web site have been known to a search engine for any notable amount of time, then there is a certain equity that has been built up. Changing content and links essentially sabotages that equity and can result in plummeting search visibility. read more

===

Who cares if you have a pretty site… if no one is ever going to see it!

If that expensive site with bells and whistles is ranked #211

I guarantee you no one is ever going to see it.

All my sites (and my clients) are listed MULTIPLE TIMES in the top ten.

Often filling the entire front page of Google with links to OUR sites.

Search Engine Marketing Camo 4x4s

“David is a search engine marketing Guru. He has been getting my websites to rank in the top 10 search results on Google multiple times before millions of other pages for multiple businesses of mine. When, I say I ranked multiple times…

I rank more than once on the first page of search results for broad search key terms. Sure, you can pay Google to place an ad and pay per click with a spending cap which turns your ad off when you reach your daily budget and limit of ad clicks but, it is much more economical to hire David and come up on the first page every time someone searches your key words.

I am a prominent outdoor videographer/ editor/ & producer who has made my stake in the outdoor video industry through youtube for the past three years. Through David’s positive marketing reinforcement strategies, David has helped me to become noticed by large television networks such as the Discovery channel.

Instead of having to call people to get my material out, the corporations and people call me. David is very reliable, easy to stay in touch with, and very economical which is important in this troubled economy. I would recommend him hands down to get your business noticed by the hundreds of millions of internet users with out hesitation! Sincerely, Stuart M.

Advertisement agencies are firms that help you to advertise in a professional and a cost effective way. Advertising agencies are becoming more and more popular, thanks to the reliability and efficiency of work offered by them. With the tremendous growth and competition in the advertising world it is becoming more and more difficult to advertise your product in the lowest possible cost. Almost each and every company local, national, international, everybody wants to advertise about their products and services, this has contributed to the increasing prices of advertising.

Big companies and organizations do not mind spending a fortune for their ads, but the pinch of the rising cost is felt by newly started small scale businesses. The big companies sign up famous personalities as their brand ambassadors and also capture all the premium time slots on the TV, premium front page corners in the news paper, cover pages of the magazine, popular internet websites, by paying high sums of money. This leaves little scope for other companies to broadcast or publish their ads and market their products. Advertisements help the brands to establish themselves as well as flourish and help them increase their brand value.

Role of advertising agencies:

- Mediator: Advertising agencies work as mediators between the publisher and the advertiser. They make sure that both the parties get the best deal and no one feels like cheated. Both the parties then have to pay some commission to the advertising agency and this is how the revenue for the advertising agency is generated.

- Right bid: The advertising agencies help the advertiser to make the right and the most profitable bid. They help the advertiser get premium slots and premium ad deals with proper market research and reliable advice. They also help you start your ad campaign in the limited revenue available.

- Ad making: They help you make the best ads. They have got people who work on the concept of the ads and who create a good as well as an effective ad. For TV commercials they also have professional and eligible ad directors.

- Designers and artists: These advertising agencies have professional artists and designers. These people help you design a good looking and attention seeking news paper or magazine or internet based ad. They also decide on the colors that should be used in the ad and make it very attractive.

- Writers: These advertising agencies also employ writers with good skill and command over the language. These writers’ help you wrote bold and witty, eye catching titles to for your ads. They also help you write the content of the ad in such a way that it will impress the reader and get him involved with your product or your services.

- Management: These advertising agencies also have people who manage your ads. These people keep your ads updated with the latest content and keep them changing every month or week to catch the attention of the reader and keep him interested. They also see to it that the content or concept of your ad is not being copied by anybody else.

Google Local Business Listings

Cheating with fake reviews or keyword stuffing the company name WILL Get you BANNED from Google Places… it IS possible to be forgiven IF you take certain steps!

The most valuable part of a local Google Advertising campaign, Google Local Business Listings are powered by Google Maps, which is now called Google Places.

Google Places business listings often appear above the organic Google listings

Did your Google Places Account Get Suspended?

Fake reviews you left singing your companies praises

keyword stuffing

entering too many custom categories

mud slinging by fake complaints against your competitors

opening a gmail account, leaving a fake review (and never logging back into that gmail account again… did you really think Google was that stupid?)

… every possible method of gaming the Google local business listing rankings has already been thought of, attempted in the last 6o minutes.

So… you bent the rules and were caught dirty??

Welcome to the club, you most certainly are not alone!

So now you’re kicked off, is there a Google path to redemption?

Yes there is!

If you want back in to the good graces of Google Places we can help!

Google announced that there are Quality Scores it uses as criteria to determine which websites should rank higher in Google’s Local Business Listing Rankings

Among them is to complete not only your Google Profile but if you have any, your employees Google profiles. See my post on Real Estate Marketing blog platform ActiveRain:

So You Want Something From Google And Didn’t Hang Your Shingle Out

A more completely filled out contact us page is another common error of omission

======

If you’d like for us to pull your fat out of the fire, we can do that:

Guaranteed Google Places or Google Local Business Listing ranking

Top 3 listing for your main keyword in Google Maps Guaranteed

Many small businesses come to us with excellent ranking in the organic listings (sometimes called the natural search results or the main body of search results) but they are NOT ranking in the 3 pack of Google Maps. Google Maps is often the ONLY search results displayed on a smart phone. Increasingly people will start using their smart phone instead of a laptop, you need your company to rank in the top 3 or you will be virtually invisible. Fee for top 3 ranking in Google Places and one listing in the top ten Google organic listings $2400 annually

It’s widely known that to boost your ranking in Google Places you should add up to 10 photos or images to your Google Places Accout

Free DIY SEO (do it yourself search engine optimization) Tricks

Let’s say you’re a web developer or a web designer doing site for a local business that sells products, you create a website (better yet a blog), you need to SEO that site. You grab some photos from the manufacturers website to represent the product line.

You need to use images to represent your companies product or service… You use public domain images… what’s the problem?

Those images have been used hundreds, perhaps thousands of times before, Googlebot has seen the code for those images used over and over again. You’re in danger of getting penalized with Google’s duplicate content penalty

There is debate over what that penalty is but you can be sure that the more unique content that is on your site, the more Googlebot will favor your site over your competitors.

Here’s a neat trick to scramble the code to make public domain images appear to be fresh content in Googlebot’s eyes. Disclaimer: Do NOT use this trick to steal other people’s images and make them your 0wn, you will eventually get caught and you webhosting will likely be cancelled!

This SEO tactic is for using images you have permission to use, for example, if you sell appliances, if you ask the manufacturer they will allow you to use the images depicting the appliance from the official manufacturers website.

Problem is Google already indexed those pictures, the underlying code for the image is known to Google as not being YOURS. You want unique content to get Google to favor your website

Fresh Content For Off the Shelf Images DIY SEO Trick

Download the image from the manufacturers website

Find said image in your My Documents and open it up in MS Paint (most PCs running windows come with paint.exe, if not it’s a free download from Microsoft)

Chop off ONE PIXEL from either the horizontal or vertical axis (in Paint click on “Attributes”)

Open the saved image in Photoshop or any free photo editing software, this time resave it as a .jpg or return it to the file form you orginally downloaded it as
